The Story Behind the Song

I wrote this song in the summer of 2020, as stores and places started to semi reopen. We had been on lockdowns for about 5 months and I distinctly remember the feeling of my flesh wanting to embrace the “new normal” of distancing myself from people, not because of a pandemic but because it felt safer than the vulnerability required to have meaningful relationships with people, which is honestly difficult when you live with chronic illnesses.

And when riots were raging and different groups of people were trying to tell everyone what to think and believe, it was just chaos. Nevertheless, I knew that isolating and divisions among the community and churches are not the heart or desire of God for the lives of His followers.

I felt a conviction by the Holy Spirit to not get settled into the comforts of isolating at home or only doing video chats with other people from my own church congregation. The world was quite literally going to hell in a handbasket and it would be the most unloving and unfaithful thing to just sit around and not fulfilling the great commission of making disciples.

This song came from that desire, much like king David’s heart expressed in the Psalms, to be taught to have a heart, perspective, and resolve to live in a manner that is worthy of our calling in God.

Bible Verses & Biblical Themes in the Song

  • Teach me your way, O Lord, that I may walk in your truth; unite my heart to fear your name. (Psalm 86:11)
  • Make me to know your ways, O Lord; teach me your paths. Lead me in your truth and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation; for you I wait all the day long…Good and upright is the Lord; therefore he instructs sinners in the way. He leads the humble in what is right, and teaches the humble his way. All the paths of the Lord are steadfast love and faithfulness, for those who keep his covenant and his testimonies. (Psalm 25:4-5, 8-10)
