The Story Behind the Song
Psalm 23 is one of the first whole chapters of the Bible that I memorized as a child, yet every time I go back through and read it, I learn something more from My Good Shepherd as He speaks to this little sheep. As David wrote this Psalm, having been a shepherd himself, he had such insight into how much sheep are utterly dependent upon the shepherd for their survival. If you don’t lead sheep to graze, they starve; if you don’t lead them to the grass with early morning dew and to still waters, they dehydrate and die; if you don’t anoint their head with oil, the flies and gnats come and irritate their facial skin and they will slam their heads into things to get the flies off; if you don’t steer them in the right direction and protect them from predators with your rod and staff, they get lost and eaten; and you have to have lots of grace and mercy with sheep because they are easily led astray and need constant care and attention. And yet, the LORD is all these things to us as our Good Shepherd to all His folds of sheep worldwide.
Just as you see sheep prance around when they’re being playful, I hope, dear brother/sister in Christ, that this song makes you move with joy in the remembrance that the Lord is your Shepherd, Jehovah Raah.
Bible Verses & Biblical Themes in the Song
The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life,
and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever. (Psalm 23)
