The Story Behind the Song

This song is based on Hagar’s experience in Genesis 16. She fled from her abusive mistress, who dealt harshly with her, and found herself by a spring in the wilderness afflicted and hopeless. God met her there and proved to her that He sees her and prophesied about the man the son in her womb would turn out to be. In meeting with the Lord, she said, “You are a God who sees me [El Roi],” for she said, “Truly here I have seen him who looks after me.” (Genesis 16:13).

When I wrote this it was more of an inner struggle to want to run away from living life because my symptoms were growing worse. I didn’t want to go out and be part of social interactions, and I felt like I was wasting away. God reminded me that He sees me, He sees my struggle, He sees my pain, and He is there to help me.

Like Hagar, you may find yourselves in a situation where you are literally or figuratively fleeing from, being in a sort of wilderness and hopeless, BUT GOD SEES YOU! I encourage you to call out to Him for help, and trust that the God who sees you will meet you where you are.

Bible Verses & Biblical Themes in the Song

  • “But Abram said to Sarai, “Behold, your servant is in your power; do to her as you please.” Then Sarai dealt harshly with her, and she fled from her. The angel of the Lord found her by a spring of water in the wilderness, the spring on the way to Shur. And he said, “Hagar, servant of Sarai, where have you come from and where are you going?” She said, “I am fleeing from my mistress Sarai.” The angel of the Lord said to her, “Return to your mistress and submit to her.” The angel of the Lord also said to her, “I will surely multiply your offspring so that they cannot be numbered for multitude.” And the angel of the Lord said to her, “Behold, you are pregnant and shall bear a son. You shall call his name Ishmael, because the Lord has listened to your affliction. He shall be a wild donkey of a man, his hand against everyone and everyone’s hand against him, and he shall dwell over against all his kinsmen.” So she called the name of the Lord who spoke to her, “You are a God who sees me,” for she said, “Truly here I have seen him who looks after me.”’ (Genesis 16:6-13)
  • “Where shall I go from your Spirit? Or where shall I flee from your presence? If I ascend to heaven, you are there! If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there! If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me.” (Psalm 139:7-10)
