The Story Behind I’m Free Indeed:

“I’m Free Indeed” is an intensely personal anthem of healing, surrender, and freedom in Christ. I first began writing this song while driving home from a Christian Healing Intensive Retreat for women who had experienced sexual abuse. After years of carrying trauma, shame, fear, and emotional bondage, I left that retreat feeling completely restored by the Lord and my heart was overflowing with joy, peace, and freedom.

As I drove the 9-hour trip home, I found myself singing at the top of my lungs, recording melodies and lyrics into my phone’s voice recorder as they came. What began as spontaneous worship in a moment of breakthrough eventually became this song.

One of the most meaningful moments behind the song came during the retreat itself. While processing trauma aloud, my body began reacting physiologically and I found myself overwhelmed mentally and emotionally. I went for a walk praying desperately for God to show me what to do because I felt completely stuck. When I reached the end of the long gravel driveway leading out of the retreat center, I looked up and saw a literal road sign that read: “End Chain Control.”

Though that sign was intended for traffic, I immediately heard God speak to my heart: “I’ve set you free, so walk like it.”

That moment directly inspired the lyric:

“Through thoughts in my head, I heard what You said So clear as day a sign you gave, to end chain control So, now walk like I am whole”

Now, two years later, I’m still walking in the freedom Christ brought me into, which made releasing this song near the two-year anniversary feel especially meaningful. The number two symbolizes witness, and this song stands as a testimony that healing is possible, restoration is real, and whom the Son sets free is truly free indeed.

Bible Verses & Biblical Themes in I’m Free Indeed:

  • John 8:36 “So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.”
  • Galatians 5:1 “For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.”
  • Psalm 23:3 “He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.”
  • Isaiah 61:1-3 “The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound”
  • Proverbs 3:5-6 “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.
  • Romans 12:2 “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”
  • Philippians 4:8 “Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.”
  • 2 Corinthians 10:4-5 “For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds. We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ”
  • Ephesians 6:10-11, 13-18 “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil… Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end, keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints”
  • 2 Corinthians 5:7 “for we walk by faith, not by sight.”
  • Hebrews 11:1 “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.”
  • Isaiah 40:31 “but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.”
  • Romans 8:1-2 “There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death.”
  • Isaiah 54:4 ““Fear not, for you will not be ashamed; be not confounded, for you will not be disgraced; for you will forget the shame of your youth, and the reproach of your widowhood you will remember no more.”
  • Joel 2:25a, 26 “I will restore to you the years that the swarming locust has eaten… You shall eat in plenty and be satisfied, and praise the name of the Lord your God, who has dealt wondrously with you. And my people shall never again be put to shame.”
  • Psalm 30:11-12 “You have turned for me my mourning into dancing; you have loosed my sackcloth and clothed me with gladness, that my glory may sing your praise and not be silent. O Lord my God, I will give thanks to you forever!”
  • Psalm 4:7 “You have put more joy in my heart than they have when their grain and wine abound.”
  • Nehemiah 8:10 “Then he said to them, “Go your way. Eat the fat and drink sweet wine and send portions to anyone who has nothing ready, for this day is holy to our Lord. And do not be grieved, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.”’
