The Story Behind O Holy Night (Christ the Lord)

In 1847, a French poet named Placide Cappeau wrote “Minuit, chrétiens” (meaning “Midnight, Christians”) at his priest’s request. Years later, an American minister, John Sullivan Dwight, translated it into English and added the stirring line, “Chains shall He break, for the slave is our brother.” It became both a Christmas hymn and a declaration of redemption and equality in Christ.

Few songs hold such majesty and intimacy. O Holy Night draws us into the scene of Bethlehem’s stable and the awe of divine grace. It reminds us that the miracle of Christ’s birth is not a distant story—it’s a personal rescue that invites us to fall on our knees in worship.

While this song is typically arranged in a slow, ballad style, this new arrangement offers an upbeat joy of “sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we” and “O praise His name forever” – in a joyful response to His appearing causing our soul to feel its worth.

O Holy Night (Christ the Lord)

Krystal Craven

Verse 1:
O holy night the stars are brightly shining
It is the night of our dear savior's birth
Long lay the world in sin and error pining
Til He appeared and the soul felt its worth
A thrill of hope, the weary world rejoices
For yonder breaks a new and glorious mourn

Chorus 1:
Fall on your knees
Oh hear the angel voices
O night divine
O night when Christ was born
O night divine, O night, O night divine

Verse 2:
Truly He taught us to love one another
His law is love, and his gospel is peace
Chains shall he break for the slave is our brother
And in his name all oppression shall cease
Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we
Let all within us praise His holy name

Chorus 2:
Christ is the Lord
O praise His name forever
His power and glory ever more proclaim
His power and glory ever more proclaim

Chorus 1:
Fall on your knees
Oh hear the angel voices
O night divine
O night when Christ was born
O night divine, O night, O night divine

Outro:
O night divine, O night, O night divine
