The Story Behind Go Tell It on the Mountain (Across the Lands)

This song was born in the fields of hardship and hope. Passed down through the voices of enslaved believers in the American South, it became a proclamation of faith that no chain could silence. John Wesley Work Jr., a musicologist and choir director, helped preserve and publish it in the early 1900s so that generations could sing what had already thundered from the hearts of the faithful for decades before: “Go tell it on the mountain, that Jesus Christ is born.”

With this song already having a chorus, that echo of surrendered resolve to share the good news, I added a pre-chorus that became a slower anthemic resolve:

“With lifted voice, with open hands
We share His hope, across the lands”

There’s something powerful about the proclamation in this song—it’s not a suggestion; it’s a mission. The gospel that brings freedom MUST be proclaimed. Like those shepherds who ran to tell what they had seen, we too are called to go—up the mountains of fear, across valleys of doubt—and tell the world that hope has come.
