Jesus' Directions
One day he got into a boat with his disciples, and he said to them, “Let us go across to the other side of the lake.” (Luke 8:22)
Over the next four weeks we’re going to dig into four distinct nuggets to glean from this story in Luke of Jesus calming the storm. This week, we’re going to focus on the directions that Jesus gives us.
From this section, we can clearly see that Jesus gave His disciples verbal directions when He said, “Let us go across to the other side of the lake”. Yet notice that it says He got into a boat with His disciples first and then gave them the direction they were going. The disciples undoubtedly realized they’d be going somewhere when getting into the boat, but they had no real direction until Jesus spoke clear directions to them.
The Same Rings True Today
Jesus still operates like this often in our lives today. He gives His followers directions as He guides our lives, but if we refuse to walk until He tells us where we’re going, we’re bound to face a tougher journey. If we dig in our heels and if our desire to know what He knows outweighs our desire for sheer obedience to God, our refinement process will not only take longer, but it means God will need to break us in order to sift away that which shouldn’t be in us first.
We can trust that Jesus will give us directions when He deems it time and that will be we actually need them, it may just not be exactly when we’d like them. Sometimes we have to get into the boat before Jesus tells you where you’re going.
Where Are You Now?
Do you feel like you’ve been told to get into the boat, but you don’t know where you’re going? Remember that that’s not a bad place to be if Jesus told you to do it and be patient and actively listening as you read the word every day.
God may be trying to teach you to be more flexible and simply be content with His will, His way, and His time in even the smallest of areas in life. Keep walking with Jesus daily and keeping in tune to Holy Spirit’s voice so you can hear when He speaks to you and gives you the next step of directions.
As much as you may want to know the full plan, trust in His sovereign plan knowing it’s all in your best interest and for your good, and He will be faithful to tell you when the time is right. God has never failed you, so trust in Him, His decisions, and His timing completely,
Even if God is only giving you one step at a time right now, trust Him in every single step!
